What are compatible protectors and how do they differ from standalone body armor?
Compatible protectors are insert-style impact protectors designed to fit inside the dedicated armor pockets of compatible Alpinestars jackets, pants, or riding garments. This collection typically includes replacement or upgrade inserts for areas such as the back, chest, shoulders, elbows, knees, or hips, depending on garment design.
Unlike standalone body armor, insert protectors rely on the garment’s internal pocket shape and retention system to stay correctly positioned. That is why compatibility matters: the protector must match the garment’s intended fitment rather than just the body area it protects.
How do I know which protector insert is compatible with my Alpinestars gear?
Check the product page, inner label, or technical description of your jacket or pants for the required protector type, pocket format, or compatibility reference. The correct insert should match the garment’s intended body zone and sit flat inside the armor pocket without folding, shifting, or creating pressure points.
If a garment is designed for insert armor, choosing the correct compatible protector is more important than choosing a universal-looking pad. For a broader overview of available options, you can also explore our protectors collection.
Are compatible protectors CE certified, and what is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 armor?
Many compatible protectors are CE certified, but the standard depends on the protection area. Limb protectors commonly use EN 1621-1, back protectors EN 1621-2, and chest protectors EN 1621-3. Always check the individual product page to confirm the exact certification and level.
Level 2 armor is tested to a stricter impact-transmission threshold than Level 1, so it generally provides higher impact attenuation. Level 1 can offer a lower-profile, more flexible solution, while Level 2 is often preferred for riders prioritizing maximum protection for road, touring, or higher-speed use.
| Protection level | Typical benefit | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Lower bulk and easier flexibility | Urban riding, lighter-use garments |
| Level 2 | Higher impact attenuation | Sport, touring, and performance-focused riding |
Can I use compatible protectors with a Tech-Air airbag system?
Sometimes, but not automatically. Tech-Air® systems and passive protectors work together only when the garment and airbag configuration are designed to allow it. In some setups, certain inserts may already be integrated, while in others you may need to remove or avoid stacking specific protectors so the airbag can deploy and fit correctly.
Before combining armor inserts with an airbag-ready garment, verify the pairing through the Tech-Air® compatibility checker. This is the safest way to confirm whether your jacket, vest, and protector layout are intended to work together.
How should I install, clean, and care for compatible protector inserts?
Install each protector in the correct internal pocket, making sure the orientation follows the pocket shape and that the insert lies flat without twisting. Once the garment is on, the protector should cover the intended zone in a natural riding position and remain stable as you move.
Remove protectors before washing the garment unless the care label says otherwise. Clean the inserts separately with a damp cloth and mild soap, then let them air dry away from direct heat. For the garment shell, always follow the care label and remove liners, armor, and any Tech-Air® components before wet cleaning.
